Some members of the ‘Saturday Night Live’ cast are confused and annoyed to have Elon Musk host show
Elon Musk hasn't yet appeared on "Saturday Night Live," but he's already being chastised by some of the show's cast members.
SNL announced on Twitter on Saturday that the business magnate will host the late-night show on May 8. Other corporate heavyweights who have hosted NBC's popular late-night show include Donald Trump (before he was president) and Steve Forbes.
Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, is well-known for his eclectic and frequently contentious remarks. He has been chastised for his comments about the Covid-19 pandemic. He has spoken out against national stay-at-home orders, comparing them to "de facto house arrest" in a tweet. In an interview with journalist Kara Swisher on an episode of The New York Times podcast "Sway," he downplayed the risk of the novel coronavirus and said he would not get the vaccine for it.
However, Musk stated on Twitter earlier this month that he supports “vaccines in general & covid vaccines in particular.”
On social media, SNL's decision to give Musk the stage was met with skepticism and criticism.
Some of the criticism came from members of the show's cast. Bowen Yang responded to one of Musk's tweets about his upcoming appearance in an Instagram story. Musk tweeted on Saturday, "Let's find out just how live Saturday Night Live really is."
Yang initially reacted with a frown. Then he posted Musk's tweet with the following message: "What the f—- does that even mean?"
Another cast member, Andrew Dismukes, shared his thoughts in an Instagram story. Dismukes wrote "ONLY CEO I WANT TO DO A SKETCH WITH IS Cher-E Oteri" over a photo of SNL alumna Cheri Oteri that looked like a magazine cover.
Aidy Bryant, a third cast member, also subtly criticized Musk. Bryant shared a tweet from former presidential candidate and Senator Bernie Sanders in an Instagram story. Sanders criticized the country's sharp wealth inequality, noting that "the 50 wealthiest people in this country own more wealth than some 165 million Americans," which he called a "moral obscenity."
Sudi Green, an SNL writer, also shared Sanders' post.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Musk is the country's second richest person, trailing only Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
Bustle and The Wrap previously reported on SNL cast members' reactions. SNL did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
