What The La La Land Cast Is Doing Now, Including Emma Stone

In a world where musicals were once abundant, with blockbusters like West Side Story, Newsies, Mary Poppins, and countless others, it seemed as if there was a serious shortage of them on the big screen. That's why we were ecstatic when Damien Chazelle released La La Land in 2016, an Oscar-winning musical about a struggling jazz musician and an actress falling in love in Hollywood and the challenges they face together.

The film was a success, with critics praising the soundtrack, acting, scenery, and everything else thrown in for good measure. Many of the accolades focused on Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling's outstanding performances, as well as the rest of the incredible cast. Since it's been nearly five years after the release of La La Land, here's what the cast has been up to since then.

Ryan Gosling (Sebastian Wilder)

I like to refer to Ryan Gosling as Hollywood's boyfriend because of how good he is in romantic comedies, but the actor has been really busy since his Oscar nomination for La La Land.

Since the release of the film, Gosling has appeared in a number of films, the majority of which have earned positive reviews. Ryan Gosling appeared in Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to Blade Runner, as well as First Man, a Damien Chazelle film about the moon landing. He'll be starring alongside Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, and others in a Russo Brothers film named The Grey Man, which will be released on Netflix in the coming years.

Emma Stone (Mia Dolan)

Emma Stone, who played Mia Dolan, a struggling actress in Hollywood, was the other star of the film and won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance. Emma Stone has been extremely busy since the release of La La Land in theaters. She had a starring role in the Netflix thriller Maniac, as well as roles in The Favourite, the zombie sequel Zombieland: Double-Tap, the animated hit The Croods: A New Age, and other films.

Emma Stone will star as Cruella DeVille in the forthcoming live-action Disney film Cruella in 2021, and she also has another film in the works, named Poor Stuff, which is currently in pre-production, so the next few years are looking bright for this talented actress.

John Legend (Keith)

In La La Land, singer/musician John Legend demonstrated his acting abilities. We all know John Legend for his incredible music and his ability as a music producer in general, but he wowed moviegoers with his abilities. Legend has stayed busy in the music industry since the release of La La Land, even coaching on the hit NBC competition show The Voice and serving as an executive producer on the Netflix Christmas musical Jingle Jangle.

That isn't to say that John Legend hasn't dabbled in acting. He's appeared as a guest star on shows like This Is Us and The Simpsons, and he'll be lending his voice to Mitchells vs. the Machines, an animated film set to premiere on Netflix in late April. From a mile away, I'm sure you'll hear his angelic voice.

J.K. Simmons (Bill)

When I think of J.K. Simmons, I think of a serious actor who is among the best in the business. I'm also reminded of Spider-J. Man's Jonah Jameson and Whiplash's terrifying jazz teacher. However, J.K. Simmons' involvement in this film was minor, but crucial to the story, as he was the catalyst for Seb to begin living his life as a true jazz musician.

Since the release of La La Land in theaters, J.K. Simmons has been extremely busy. To be honest, this man has appeared in many more films than I can list. J.K. Simmons has appeared in hit films such as the superhero film Justice League, as his classic character J. Jonah Jameson in a cameo in Spider-Man: Far From Home, and in the 2020 comedy Palm Springs, to name a few.

He's also appeared as a guest or recurring character on shows like The Stand and others.

J.K. Simmons has a number of films coming out in 2021, including Ghostbusters: Afterlife, a sequel to Ghostbusters, and The Tomorrow War, a military sci-fi action film, so this year looks promising for this Hollywood legend.

Rosemarie DeWitt (Laura Wilder)

Laura

Wilder, played by the wonderful Rosemarie DeWitt, was one of the many side characters in La La Land who really helped drive the story along with the great music. DeWitt has appeared in a number of films since the film's release, including Sweet Virginia, Arizona, Song of Back and Neck, and The Professor. She's also appeared in a few TV shows as a guest star, including "Arkangel," a Black Mirror episode.

Rosemarie DeWitt's most notable performance since La La Land is arguably her lead role in the Hulu drama series Little Fires Everywhere, which has earned several awards nominations. DeWitt is currently shooting a new series called Pantheon, so keep an eye out for her in the near future.

Finn Wittrock (Greg)

Finn Wittrock played a minor role in this film, but he is an excellent addition to La La Land. Wittrock has had a lot of work since his appearance in the award-winning film, including roles on the FX horror anthology series American Horror Story and a starring role in the Netflix series Ratched. He's also appeared in a number of films, many of which have received critical acclaim, including If Beale Street Could Talk and Judy.

Wittrock has a lot of projects lined up in the coming years, including A Mouthful of Air, in which he will appear opposite Amanda Seyfried, and the psychological thriller Deep Water. Wittrock will also appear in the tenth season of American Horror Story, titled American Horror Story: Double Feature, in which he will play a role.

Sonoya Mizuno (Caitlin)

Sonoya Mizuno has been extremely busy since her appearance in La La Land as the second of Mia's three roommates. Mizuno's film credits include the thriller Annihilation, the wildly popular rom-com Crazy Rich Asians, and a role in the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast.

Moving on to television, Sonoya Mizuno appeared in Maniac, the same Netflix series in which Emma Stone and Jonah Hill starred. But keep an eye out for Mizuno, who has landed a part in the Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon, which will tell the tale of some of the Targaryens' history. I'm sure this would be a major chance for the starlet to shine, given how famous the main show has been.

With so many films starring these actors and actresses coming out in the coming years, I'll have to double-check my 2021 movie releases to make sure I know when they'll be back on the big screen.
