Donald Trump uses new website to rewrite history of his presidency
Donald Trump has unveiled a new website commemorating his tenure as president of the United States, which contains a somewhat limited retelling of his presidency's history.
45office.com is described as a place where Trump's supporters can keep in touch and where he can continue his "America first" movement.
The site's centerpiece is an 885-word history of Trump's administration, which lists the successes of what it terms "history's most remarkable political campaign."
He dethroned political dynasties, vanquished "the Washington elite," and "overcame nearly every entrenched power system," according to the book's hyperbolic opening paragraph.
However, some pivotal points in Trump's presidency are left out of history.
“President Trump ushered in an era of unparalleled economic growth, job formation, soaring salaries, and booming incomes,” according to the site. Trump has consistently asserted that his administration is creating "the greatest economy in the history of our world," an assertion that has been debunked multiple times. It also ignores the fact that the US economy experienced one of the worst financial meltdowns in history during the pandemic last year.
On Trump's watch, the United States had the world's highest coronavirus death toll, but the website calls his response to the pandemic a victory, saying, "When the coronavirus plague came from China, afflicting every nation across the globe, President Trump responded early and decisively." It fails to note that, even as the number of cases grew, Trump identified coronavirus as an issue that was “going to go away” five times in March 2020.
Trump is also the first US president in history to face impeachment hearings twice in Congress. He was also the first US president in more than a century to lose the popular vote twice. In 2016, Hillary Clinton received 2.8 million more votes than Trump, and Joe Biden's margin of victory in 2020 was even greater, at 7 million votes.
It also fails to note that while in office, he became the first major world leader to be barred from social media outlets such as Facebook and Twitter after it was determined that he had used them to incite an uprising. The Capitol riot, which claimed the lives of five people, is also unworthy of mention.
“The office of Donald J Trump is committed to upholding the glorious legacy of the Trump administration, while at the same time promoting the America first agenda,” according to the website's homepage.
It also promises that “the office of Donald J Trump will work to inform, educate, and inspire Americans from all walks of life as we aim to create a truly great American future through civic participation and public activism.”
Despite his defeat in the 2020 election, Trump continues to wield enormous power within the Republican Party and has hinted at a presidential run in 2024. He's also begun aggressively supporting Republican candidates who might be able to unseat members of his own party who he believes betrayed him by refusing to back his false allegations of election fraud last year.
Jason Miller, a former Trump campaign spokesman, said in an interview with Fox News earlier this month that Trump will launch his own social media site in the coming months after being banned from Twitter and Facebook.
